a SERIES of unfortunate events...

Strangely enough, Karma has brought unto me two episodes of TV series with the mention of hipsters in them.

The first, and most recent, is from the sixth episode of Happy Endings, a new comedy series....where one of the main characters, Penny, meets a guy while wearing her grungiest outfit to the laundromat (duh, laundry day grunge!) and they end up getting coffee together after he comments, what she think is sarcastic admiration, on her laundry day outfit. However, it turns out that the guy wears "laundry day style" grunge...well, EVERYday. Yup, he´s a hipster! She tries to weave herself into the hipster world by lacing on wacky layers of vintage and unneccesary accesories,

pretending nothing is cool and not trying too hard...at anything.

It's pretty funny actually. Not spot-on on our precious urban tribe but, hey, it's worth a self-analytical narcissistic laugh or two :p

and right after that refreshing breath of current day media, I side stepped into my comfy 90's nostalgia....onyl to find that in the Dawson's Creek episode I chose to watch (yup, started late nineties but I'm still counting it in) Joey Potter appears in the scene reading Jack Kerouac, the voice of the Beat generation, 's On the road . You would think that the intellectual and well-read Joey Potter would obviously bestow a loving comment about the book but when asked what she thinks of it so far se answers "I think it sucks...oh what? just because every quasi-bohemian hipster with pretensions of literary greatness worships at the alter of kerouac that means I should too?" Sharp, witty and against the crowd. That's our Joey for ya. She's only proven hipster worthyness by consciously going against the hipster trend.
At least I want to see it that way.

Tell me you can't imagine her in a pair of Buddy Holly glasses with a straw fedora and a thin scarf loosely wrapped around her collar?

And uh, since we're on the subject of Tv shows and hipster-referrencing, check out http://hipstercommunity.tumblr.com . They put quotes from the TV show Community on hipsteresque photos. Pretty good and some are pretty funny.

nomnomnom...IT'S BACOOOOOOOON!

Okay, so we all remember the commercial with the hyper active dog, right...and Eric Foreman's hilarious moment taunting his father who is told not to eat this salty meat-treat on That 70's Show...but EVERYBODY's gotta acknowledge the extreme fad of bacon-mania.

Denny's just added a bacon.maple syrup topping for their sundaes. They have a section for baconlovers segmented into their menu as Baconalia.

I've seen bacon-related recipes pop up all over the internet (Whodathunk a couple years ago that Bacon Cupcakesmilkshakeice cream, cocktailsjampopcorn or cookieswould exist!?!)

I was able to find a list of wacky bacony products...but that doesn't include chocolate barsMaple-Bacon infused coffee (instante flashback to hearing Dennis Leary rant on about the unholiness of flavored coffee), pancake mix, jelly beans, etc.

Jim Gaffigan, the comic, loooooves this breakfast food. MC Trey raps about his addiction to this fatty food.

Now let us all ponder together if Lady Gaga's vegetarian-hated get-up was worn to keep up with the times...

Ukulele vs ukelele

So, err, one is the American spelling and the other the British...I have no idea which BUT...what I do know...is that uk-e/u-leles (I'm just going to stick with the "e" one from here on, it sounds more like how I pronounce it, so, err...) ARE THE ULTMATE HIPSTER MUSICAL INSTRUMENT FAD OF OUR TIMES!

Ah, yes. the idea of a mini guitar with a slightly higher pitch is the dream of any anti-mainstreamer. This said, here's a brief playlist of songs featuring ukelele's that are catchy or have that hipster appeal to them, with uke-tastic Modderno photos after them. Enjoy, my hip-lovelies!:

Diana, queen of lomography

Welcome, welcome, enjoy my dear friends, the picture show of picture cameras, prepared for your loving retro-adoration.

According to the first definition in urban dictionary (the unofficial gramatical document of choice for all hipsters and mod-children), lomography is:

a type of art photography in which color is emphasized. Traditionally, cameras such as the Holga, Lomo, Colorsplash, and Supersampler are used to create strange and unusual photographs. Lomographic photos are primarily characterized by vignettes (blurry and faded edges), random subjects, and nonadherance to traditional photography rules.
Example: Lomography is a pleasant break from most photojournalism.

But then again, according to other entries:
  • The so called "art form” of taking really lousy pictures with an overrated overpriced, over hyped poorly made piece of crap of a camera. Such as the Holga and Diana

  • A form of photography devoid of talent, quality and overall eye-pleasingness. The Site of lomography sells cameras, such as the Holga and LC-A, to trend-whores at three times a sensible price.
Lomography is the photography form still in trend due to our kind, the retro-lovers, the nostalgics....from the 60's to the 80's it was the most common form of photography available....and among all the cameras in this trend, the reigning queen is Diana. About her, our goddess in perspective, Urban Dictionary says:
  • Diana camera is a classic toy camera. A collectible item. It produces weird and dreamy pictures. Dianas have been manifactured somewhere around the 1960's in China.

Other cool cams include the Split cam (which does exactly that, it splits the screen)

 Holga (consider her Diana's sister)

Spinner 360 (which turns 360 over the axis-grip to take full panoramic pics)

the Supersampler (shooting 4 frames into one)

and the Oktomat (shooting 8 frames into one),

among others.

The Mod Squad is a proud owner of a Zenit X12, which hasn't been tested out since found....but will be, muahahaha.

Here are some more exaples of pics taken with lomography cameras; just remember to wipe the drool of your face when you finish looking at them...
